The city of Fontana is offering disposal services for household hazardous waste. Disposal is free for residents, and the limit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds. Individual containers over 5 gallons and business waste will not be accepted. Residents are required to bring a California identification card with a Fontana city address. Tax roll or multi-family residents must bring a photographed identification with a city address.

Fontana to name school for O’Day Short, victim of racial violence

The Fontana Unified school board voted Wednesday to name an elementary school for O’Day Short, the Black man whose family – himself, wife and two young children – died in a suspicious fire after they moved into a White neighborhood in 1945 and were warned they should leave. (I wrote about the tragedy in 2015.) The school, Randall Pepper Elementary, is built on the site of their home. It was an emotional board meeting and it’s the subject of my Friday “We are showing the world we are willing to overcome our history,” mayor says of move to honor family killed in 1945. Former motel in Fontana is now a Homeless Prevention Resource and Care Center

It’s been a long journey for Fontana officials who have been trying to solve the homelessness crisis, but now they believe they are on the right path.

On July 1, the city hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Path, a Homeless Prevention Resource and Care Center located at 17133 Valley Boulevard.

The city has converted a 26,418 square-foot building that was previously a motel into a “remarkable facility” that will initially house 30 individuals and eventually will provide beds for 120 people, Mayor Acquanetta Warren said.
